Once hyperlipidaemia has been discovered, it should be confirmed (Fig. 6.29), and lipoproteins should be evaluated by using appropriate methods (see below).
Acquired forms of hyperlipidaemia need to be excluded, and genetic forms should be sought by careful family history. Special emphasis should be placed on the mother's side of the family, since atherosclerotic complications manifest later in females. Information concerning the mother's male siblings and father may therefore prove valuable in arriving at a genetic diagnosis.
